City Profile:

The District of Mission is a community nestled on a southern coastal mountain slope overlooking the mighty Fraser River. With a population of over 38 000 people, Mission is one of the fastest growing communities in BC and has some of the most affordable housing in the Lower Mainland. It is located just 70 km East of Vancouver and it is 20 km north of the US border crossing at Huntingdon.

Mission incorporated in 1861 and was named after the mission built by the Oblates of the Immaculate Mary. It continued to grow throughout the late 1800s due to the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway. On September 10, 1904 Mission experienced the only armed train robbery in Canada when the infamous Bill Miner robbed a CPR train as it left the town.  Mission’s forestry and agriculture industries expanded over the next 100 years, despite a major flood in 1948 that forced the downtown core to be relocated from the waterfront to its current location. The city has continued to grow in population, business and diversity ever since.

The city is located on BC’s Lougheed Highway (Highway 7) and residents can access Highway 1 after crossing the Abbotsford-Mission Bridge, or the Golden Ears Bridge in Pitt Meadows. Both Highway 1 and Highway 7 travel all the way to Vancouver. Mission’s residents also have the opportunity to access Downtown Vancouver by using the West Coast Express train service. The Central Valley Transit System serves Mission and provides many connections to Abbotsford. The transit options and the city’s accessibility allow residents to explore the Lower Mainland with ease, as well as providing them with endless business and personal opportunities.

Transportation:

West Coast Express

The West Coast Express in an efficient commuter train linking Mission, Port Haney, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam, Port Moody and Downtown Vancouver. It operates Monday through Friday during peak commuter periods and the trip from Mission to Downtown Vancouver only takes 1 hour and 13 minutes. A bus service also runs on weekends.

Central Fraser Valley Transit System
BC Transit in the Mission area is known as ValleyMAX Transit System and they receive funding on a cost sharing basis with the community of Abbotsford. The transit services are becoming more and more accessible based on our growing community’s needs, and they provide many opportunities to connect with services in Abbotsford.
